Upon arrival at Melbourne Airport, you will find that there are many transport options available and ready to take you straight to the CBD. But how do you avoid paying too much or being left high and dry? On holidays especially, no one wants to spend more time on transport than what’s necessary. While getting from A to B is important, having more pocket money for other things is definitely a bonus.
What are your options?
Catch a cab
Taxis are always readily available, but they’re generally the most expensive method by far. From the CBD to the airport, a cab ride will cost you anywhere from $55 to $65. This includes the compulsory airport fee and the toll charges from the CityLink tollway. It will take around 20 to 40 minutes, which is a similar timeframe to some more cost effective options.
Hitch a ride on the SkyBus
Costing between $20 and $40, this is definitely a cheaper option on taking a cab. However, the cost also depends on whether you purchase a one-way or return ticket. Additionally, the time it takes to reach the CBD is the same as a taxi, and runs 24 hours a day, all week long.
There are other shuttle buses available as well, which may take you closer to your chosen hotel. The prices for these are also similar to the SkyBus, while commute time isn’t far off the same, depending on where you are headed. Note that children travel for free on the SkyBus, so this is a great way to save pennies if you’ve got your whole family in tow.
Mix it up
There’s no one set way you have to travel, and sometimes mixing it up makes things a lot cheaper. It can cost as little as $4 to get a mix of trains and public buses to your destination, however, the time it takes to get there is greatly increased. With the limitation of scheduling and set stops, it can take up to an hour and a half to get where you want to go – if you choose to stop and start your commute this way.
Hire a car
A viable option if you are looking to drive yourself around Melbourne during your stay is to hire a car. There are five or so providers at Melbourne Airport alone, and some may even cover you for the CityLink tollways. If not, don't fret. There’s always the toll-free route – it may just take a little longer to get to your destination.
